Every business that holds personal data has a legal duty to protect it, not only while it is in active use, but at every stage of its lifecycle, including the point at which hardware is decommissioned and disposed of.
For many UK businesses, this is exactly where compliance gaps appear. IT equipment accumulates. Refresh cycles happen. Old laptops go into storage cupboards and hard drives sit in boxes waiting for someone to deal with them, while the data on those drives remains fully accessible to anyone with the right software and physical access to the device.
EcoTech IT’s GDPR compliant data disposal service closes that gap. We collect your redundant hardware, permanently destroy the data on every storage device, recycle the physical components through certified channels, and provide documentation proving the job was done to the required legal standard.
The Legal Context
The UK GDPR requires businesses to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data. This obligation extends explicitly to the disposal of hardware that holds personal data.
The Information Commissioner’s Office has published clear guidance on this point. Formatting a drive or deleting files does not constitute secure disposal. What is expected is a method that renders data permanently unrecoverable, supported by documented evidence.
NIST 800-88 Compliant Data Wiping
The internationally recognised benchmark for secure media sanitisation is NIST Special Publication 800-88, produced by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. EcoTech IT uses NIST 800-88 compliant data wiping across all functional storage devices, overwriting every addressable location on a drive, not just the files visible through the operating system, to a standard that makes recovery impossible by any known technique.
For devices that cannot be switched on, we carry out certified physical destruction of the storage media instead. In both cases, we produce an individual, itemised certificate of data destruction for every device processed, listing the make, model and serial number, the method of sanitisation applied, and the date of processing.
Our Process
Collection. Our team arrives at your premises at an agreed time and collects your redundant hardware.
Data destruction. Every storage device is processed at our facility using NIST 800-88 compliant data wiping, or physical destruction where appropriate. The outcome is documented at device level.
Environmentally compliant recycling. Following data destruction, hardware is processed through our zero to landfill recycling pipeline, with metals, plastics, glass and circuit board components separated and channelled into certified industrial recycling streams in line with the WEEE Directive.
Documentation. You receive an itemised certificate of data destruction covering every device collected, prepared in a format suitable for filing against your data protection records or presenting to auditors.
Who We Serve
EcoTech IT works with a wide range of businesses across the region, including retail businesses managing seasonal or store level refreshes, hospitality venues replacing point of sale and office hardware, professional practices disposing of retired workstations, manufacturers and warehouses clearing older equipment, and schools and multi academy trusts undertaking infrastructure upgrades.
Whatever your business’s size or sector, our service is designed to be straightforward and minimally disruptive. We handle the destruction and the paperwork. You simply tell us what you have and when suits you.
Qualifying for Free Collection
Collections with around twenty or more working laptops, Windows 11 compatible desktops or still supported tablets may qualify for free collection. Other items can sometimes qualify too, so it is always worth contacting us with a list or a few photos. Businesses located close together can also combine their collections to reach the threshold together, each still receiving separate paperwork and processing.
Working Across the South West
Although our base is in Devizes, we collect regularly from businesses across the wider South West, including Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, Bath, Swindon and Southampton. Wherever your business is based, you can expect the same documentation standards and the same commitment to zero to landfill processing.
